Three arrested in Marimanti for possession of four live pancake tortoises (PHOTO)



Monday, August 11, 2025 - A joint operation by the National Police Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) resulted in the arrest of three suspects at Marimanti Market on charges of illegally transporting four live Pancake Tortoises.

The suspects were apprehended while attempting to smuggle the endangered tortoises concealed inside a carton.

The wildlife officers and police swiftly acted on intelligence provided by the public, leading to the successful interception of the traffickers.

The three individuals have been taken into custody and await processing and court arraignment.

Meanwhile, the Pancake Tortoises have been secured as evidence and will be cared for under KWS custody.

The National Police Service has commended the community for their vigilance and timely intelligence, urging citizens to continue reporting wildlife crimes to help protect Kenya’s biodiversity.
