Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - Vocal Meru politician and staunch Ruto loyalist, Mike Makarina, has made a stunning U-turn, publicly admitting that the much-hyped Social Health Authority (SHA) is failing ordinary Kenyans after personally experiencing its shortcomings.
Makarina, who has spent months defending the controversial Government-backed
health scheme, was recently admitted to hospital after falling ill.
But what shocked many was his online confession shortly
after being discharged: the SHA cover he had been promoting barely made a dent
in his hospital bill.
“The so-called health cover was promising peanuts, a figure
so little. I use that amount to make one phone call,” he lamented in a Facebook
post.
It took the intervention of former DCI
boss, George Kinoti, a long-time friend, to step in and settle
the medical bill after Makarina was left stranded.
This public admission marks a major shift for Makarina, who
has been among the most vocal defenders of President Ruto’s healthcare reforms.
His statement sparked a storm online, with many Kenyans
saying, “Now he knows what the common mwananchi goes through.”
