RUTO tears into former CJ MARAGA over “Failed State” remarks and questions his presidential ambitions

Wednesday, July 23, 2025 - President William Ruto has hit back at former Chief Justice David Maraga over remarks suggesting Kenya is on the brink of becoming a failed state.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 23rd, at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Ruto appeared to indirectly criticize Maraga, questioning why someone would want to lead a country they claim is collapsing.

“Someone who just retired after working for 40, 50 years now wants to be President.”

“I hear him say Kenya is a failed state.”

“I ask myself - so for 40 years, you worked in a failed state? And now you want to lead it?” Ruto said.

The President dismissed the failed State claims, pointing to Kenya’s vibrant investment climate as proof of progress.

“Exchanges like the Nairobi Stock Exchange - voted Africa’s best last year - don’t exist in failed states,” he added.

Maraga, speaking on Monday, July 21st, warned that Kenya is veering dangerously close to state failure, citing rising political repression, economic decline, and disregard for human rights.

He accused the Government of using excessive force during recent protests and suppressing constitutional freedoms.

“When those who oppose the Government are kidnapped, killed, or maimed, and the right to protest is crushed, that’s not a democracy,” Maraga said.
