Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday, July 30th, signed a series of landmark bilateral agreements at State House, Nairobi, just a day after Tanzania imposed a ban affecting some Kenyan businesses operating within its borders.
The two leaders inked eight new agreements, bringing the
total number of cooperation pacts between Kenya and Uganda to 25.
Key among them is a partnership between the Kenya National
Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UNBS)
to boost data exchange and curb illicit trade.
A significant highlight of the meeting was a commitment to
resolve the long-standing Migingo Island dispute through a newly signed
Fisheries and Aquaculture Agreement, which sets out a framework for joint
consultation and cooperation.
The two nations also agreed to enhance transport and
logistics infrastructure, including the ongoing Nairobi–Nakuru–Malaba Highway
dualling project and the Busia Metro Project (2025–2028), which aims to improve
cross-border trade and economic growth.
Other deals cover cooperation in tourism, agriculture,
mining, animal technology, and property rights to support local governance.
President Ruto also announced the appointment of a special
envoy for the Atekeri communities spanning Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan to
foster cultural and tourism ties.
On his part, Museveni urged African youth to focus on
productive sectors, highlighting the untapped potential of Africa’s shared
markets and resources.
