Court issues directive on petition challenging RUTO’s Ksh 1.2 billion State House church project after public uproar

Monday, July 7, 2025 - The High Court has scheduled a hearing for July 24th, 2025, to address a petition seeking to halt the construction of a Ksh1.2 billion church at State House, Nairobi.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi certified the petition as urgent and directed petitioner Levy Munyeri, an advocate of the High Court, to file a physical copy within three days.

Respondents have seven days to file their responses.

Munyeri's petition argues that the construction violates the Constitution, citing lack of transparency, absence of public participation, and failure to involve Parliament in the decision-making process.

He also asked the court to issue conservatory orders to suspend the ongoing construction, which he claims is already visible through satellite imagery.

“The construction is going nowhere,” Munyeri declared in a statement, expressing confidence that the court would uphold constitutional values.

Earlier this week, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah also voiced strong opposition, accusing President William Ruto of attempting to impose Christianity as a state religion and misusing public land.

In an open letter, Omtatah maintained that State House is public property and any major developments must involve citizen input.

Despite mounting criticism, President Ruto has repeatedly defended the project and vowed to proceed with the construction, dismissing calls for its suspension.
