Monday, June 16, 2025 - The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has accused Nairobi Central Police Station OCS, Samson Taalam, of tampering with CCTV footage linked to the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Appearing before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, June 17th,
the DPP, through state counsel, claimed Taalam paid a technician Ksh3,000 to
erase surveillance footage covering June 6th and 7th -
days critical to the investigation.
The technician, who installed the station’s 25 cameras and
digital video recorder (DVR) in 2024, reportedly received an early morning call
from a police officer urging him to report to the station.
Upon arrival, he was taken to a senior officer’s office and
allegedly instructed to delete specific footage.
The DPP told the court that as the custodian of the
station’s surveillance systems, Taalam’s actions amounted to obstruction of
justice.
“The respondent’s position as OCS poses a significant risk
of interference with key witnesses who were on duty at the time,” the DPP said
while seeking to detain Taalam for 21 days.
The technician was arrested on Friday, June 13th,
in a Nairobi estate.
Taalam was arrested the same day in Eldoret after allegedly
going into hiding, and later handed over to the Independent Policing Oversight
Authority (IPOA).
DCI Director Mohamed Amin had earlier identified Taalam as a
key suspect in Ojwang’s death, revealing to a Senate committee that the OCS had
declined to book Ojwang after his arrest.
However, Talaam
has insisted that he was not at the station when Ojwang was brought in
following his arrest in Homa Bay.
He
said he had left the station under his deputy as he embarked on his personal
matters.
