Wednesday, June 18, 2025 - The Judiciary has issued a strongly worded statement expressing concern over the ongoing protests across the country, decrying rising cases of police brutality and the infiltration of peaceful demonstrations by violent goons.
In a statement released on Wednesday, June 18th,
Judiciary Spokesperson, Paul Ndemo, extended condolences to the family of
Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody, and wished a speedy recovery to all
those injured.
“The Judiciary extends its deepest condolences to the family
of Albert Ojwang and wishes a quick and full recovery to those injured during
the recent protests,” the statement read.
The Judiciary condemned the use of excessive force by police
and the disruption of peaceful assemblies by criminal elements, calling on the
National Police Service to fulfill its mandate.
“The Judiciary expresses concern over unjustified police
brutality and the growing trend of peaceful protests being hijacked by goons.”
“The police must identify, apprehend, and prosecute
perpetrators and their sponsors,” it stated.
With several cases now before the courts, the Judiciary
reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice impartially and efficiently,
particularly in matters involving misconduct and brutality.
The statement also clarified why judges and senior judicial
officers often refrain from commenting on public controversies.
“To preserve impartiality and independence, judges globally
do not comment on issues likely to end up in court.”
“This is why the Office of the Judiciary Spokesperson was
created,” the statement concluded.
