Wednesday, June 18, 2025 - Senior Catholic bishops have broken their silence on the nationwide unrest, calling for peace and prayer amid rising tensions following police brutality and violent protests.
Speaking on Wednesday, June 18th, Archbishop
Philip Anyolo of the Nairobi Archdiocese condemned the point-blank shooting of
Boniface Kariuki, a hawker, by police during protests in the capital.
He also decried the looting of shops by rogue elements
exploiting the demonstrations.
Archbishop Anyolo urged Catholics across the country to pray
the rosary for the next three days with four specific intentions: respect for
human life and dignity, restoration of peace and order, comfort for grieving
families, and divine guidance for national leaders.
“The events we are witnessing are heartbreaking. We are
calling for a three-day rosary marathon for peace and healing,” Anyolo said.
He further directed all parishes to dedicate upcoming Sunday
Mass to these intentions.
The call comes in the wake of shocking video footage showing
two police officers assaulting and shooting Kariuki on Mondlane Street in
Nairobi’s CBD.
The incident sparked national outrage and prompted swift
action from authorities.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed the
arrest of the officers involved, identified as Masinde Baraza and Duncan
Kiprono from Kileleshwa Police Station.
The two are currently held at Capitol Hill Police Station
pending arraignment.
Kariuki, who was selling face masks at the time of the
shooting, is recovering at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Medical reports indicate that he sustained serious head
injuries after being shot with a rubber bullet.
The bishops called for justice and restraint, warning that
the escalating violence threatens the country’s social fabric.
