Friday, June 20, 2025 - Bishops from the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Nyanza region have called for the immediate disbandment of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Speaking at ACK St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Kisumu on Friday,
the Bishops, led by Chairman Dr. David Kodia, claimed that the DCI has become a
tool of oppression, used by powerful individuals to harass and silence ordinary
Kenyans.
"The time has come for a body like the DCI to be phased
out. It has turned into a dreaded unit misused by those in power," said
Dr. Kodia, reading a joint statement from the bishops.
The clergy alleged that the DCI is behind a string of
enforced disappearances, killings, and harassment of citizens.
They also criticised the Independent Policing Oversight
Authority (IPOA) for failing in its watchdog role, branding it a
"toothless dog" that only offers empty reassurances.
The bishops urged police officers to stop brutalising
Kenyans and warned that public resentment could soon erupt into retaliation.
“Kenyans are cursing the police daily for their inhumane
actions,” said Maseno West Bishop.
They also challenged President William Ruto to take decisive
action, accusing him of failing to protect citizens from police excesses.
“The president, as the symbol of national unity, has failed
to stand with the people,” the bishops stated.
Their remarks come amid growing outrage over recent cases of
police brutality, including the death of teacher Albert Ojwang in police
custody and the shooting of hawker, Boniface Kariuki.
