Monday, May 5, 2025 - Dennis Itumbi, the Head of Presidential Special Projects and the Creative Economy, has downplayed the incident in Kehancha Town, Migori County, where a shoe was thrown at President William Ruto during a rally.
Sharing an alternate video online, Itumbi claimed the
now-viral incident was a "funny joke gone wrong."
The footage, captured from a frontal angle, appears to show
a man playfully holding up a dusty shoe, mimicking a smartphone, to “record”
the President’s speech.
As Ruto begins speaking, a second man, seemingly annoyed by
the gesture, slaps the shoe away.
It then inadvertently flies forward, striking the President.
"It was never an attack," Itumbi said.
"One person - without a phone - jokingly used a shoe to
record.”
“Someone nearby got irritated and hit the shoe.”
“Sadly, it flew straight to the President."
On the same breath, Itumbi appealed to the public to help
identify the "shoe-cam" holder, revealing that businessman Sam Mburu
had offered to gift him a real phone so he could “create content with proper
tools.”
Meanwhile, police confirmed the arrest of three individuals
in connection with the incident.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said investigations were
ongoing to determine whether the act was a prank or a coordinated attempt to
breach presidential security.
Despite the chaos, Ruto quickly regained composure and
continued addressing the crowd.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with
Itumbi's version of events drawing both amusement and skepticism.
