Friday, August 23, 2024 - Narc Kenya chairperson, Martha Karua, has said the country's opposition will not be shaken by the exit of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga from Kenya’s political arena.
Raila Odinga announced on Wednesday that he will not be
actively involved in Kenya’s politics if he clinches the AUC chairmanship next
year.
"You know that I will begin working for the continent
once I am elected in February next year. At the moment, I am involved in the
campaigns, but that does not mean that Kenya will cease to exist," Raila
told journalists in Nairobi.
Speaking on Thursday, Karua said whether Raila gets the
African Union Commission chairmanship or not, her party will remain the voice
of the people.
She insisted that the opposition role is a job they take
seriously.
"Whether or not our brother Raila goes to AU, and we
wish him well, the position doesn't change.”
“He remains here, we still remain a voice, he goes we still
play our role.”
“Our being in the opposition is not predicated in the
presence or absence of our brother, it is a duty we take up seriously,"
Karua said.
Karua further said her party will always stand up for what is
right and will work with like-minded parties in playing the opposition role.
"We do not need any title and we have always tried to be
good citizens who take up their civil responsibility in this country.”
“This party will continue to stand up for what is right.”
“We are not a party in government, we are the Opposition and
we are used to being in the opposition trenches for the longest.”
"You can expect that we'll continue to do so and our
colleagues who wish to do so will collaborate with them but I speak for Narc
Kenya and this is our promise to Kenyans," Karua insisted.
