Monday, October 05, 2026 - Kenyan comedian Eddie Butita has sparked reactions and debate online after sharing his humorous perspective on the growing conversation around paternity tests.
According to Butita, some traditional Luhya practices can
reveal whether a child belongs to a man long before a hospital DNA test is
needed.
Butita weighed in on the topic following the viral case of
content creator Ciggie Johnson, who
was left shocked after DNA results reportedly revealed that the child he had
raised for 12 years was not his biological child.
Reacting to the matter, Butita admitted he finds such
stories difficult to comprehend.
“Hii story ya DNA inanishangaza sana. Ati mtu anaweza kuwa
na mtoto for all those many years na hajawahi kujua.
“Kwani mnaworkingi aje? Ju kwa Waluya kitu kama hiyo haiwezi
happen,” he said.
The comedian went on to reference a traditional Luhya
practice in which a newborn is taken to the man's family and bathed by a close
female relative, often an aunt or mother.
Butita jokingly suggested that the custom serves as an
unofficial paternity test within some families.
“Hiyo kitu ikifanywa ka sio mtoto wako, I’m telling you it’s
only the Luhyas who can attest to the consequences that will be there,” he
remarked.
“So there are some
common things that Luyas do that automatically fit to be DNA, that don’t need a
paternity test in hospital.”
He concluded: “When a child who’s not yours is bathed by
your aunt, that’s the end of it.”
