Thursday, May 14, 2026 - Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has emerged as the leading contender to deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 elections, according to a new survey by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA).
The poll, released on Thursday, May 14th, shows
Kindiki commanding 59 percent support as Ruto’s preferred running mate.
Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson, Gladys Wanga, follows
distantly with 12 percent.
Other ODM figures, including party leader Oburu Oginga and
Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho, each secured just 3 percent.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi attracted 2
percent, while National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula trailed with 1
percent.
The findings highlight a growing political dilemma for
President Ruto, who faces mounting pressure from ODM leaders to allocate the Deputy
President slot to their camp as part of the broad-based Government arrangement.
ODM insists that the position is their fair share for
joining the coalition, but Kindiki has firmly declared that his seat is not up
for negotiation.
The poll also highlighted ODM’s internal divisions.
Edwin Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” faction enjoys overwhelming
support at 73 percent, compared to Oburu Oginga’s “Linda Ground” faction at 24
percent.
This split follows the death of Raila Odinga in October
2025, which left the party grappling with succession battles and division over
cooperation with Ruto’s Government.
