2026 - Former Chief Justice, David Maraga, has castigated Tanzanian
President, Samia Suluhu, over her controversial advice to President Ruto on
dealing with Gen Z activists.
In a strongly worded statement, Maraga said he was disturbed
by Suluhu’s remarks during a joint appearance with Kenyan President, William
Ruto, at Tanzania’s National Assembly.
During her speech, Suluhu openly proposed coordinated action
against Gen Z activists, telling president Ruto to “piga mikwaju” (code
for using force to quell suppress dissent).
Maraga warned that such sentiments risk shrinking civic
space and undermining the rule of law.
“The axis of tyranny that Presidents Suluhu and Ruto are
constructing threatens to return our region to autocracy,” he
declared.
Recalling his tenure, Maraga noted his close collaboration
with Tanzanian judicial counterparts to strengthen justice systems within the
East African Community.
He cautioned that those gains could be eroded if dissent is
suppressed.
The former CJ linked the controversy to unresolved
accountability issues in Tanzania following the October 29th, 2025 General
Elections, where dozens reportedly died from gunshot wounds.
“To date, not a single person has been held accountable,”
he emphasized.
Maraga urged citizens across East Africa to remain vigilant
and speak out against actions that weaken democratic institutions.
“Our East African Jumuiya cannot advance while leaders suppress
dissent and trample on basic rights,” he stated.
