Sunday, 1 March 2026 - As Kenyans come to terms with the tragic helicopter
crash in Nandi on Saturday that claimed six lives, including Emurua Dikirr MP, Johana
Ng’eno, new details have emerged about the ill‑fated aircraft.
The helicopter, registration Airbus
5Y-DSB, was widely used by senior leaders across the country.
Interior Cabinet Secretary
Kipchumba Murkomen and Deputy Inspector General of Police Masengeli are among
high‑profile figures who had previously flown in the chopper.
Just last week, National
Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and President Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, used the same
aircraft during a tour of western Kenya.
Operated by Corporate
Helicopters Kenya, a company associated with Royal Media Services owner S.K.
Macharia, the 5Y‑DSB was regarded as one of the most capable and versatile
helicopters in the country.
Aviation experts suggest that
its advanced capabilities may have given the pilot confidence to attempt
navigating extreme weather conditions.
Unfortunately, heavy rainfall and poor visibility proved overwhelming, leading to the fatal crash.
