2025 - Renowned academic Prof. Thomas Onyango Mboya has been brutally
killed in a land dispute attack in Kakrigu village, Rusinga Island, Suba, Homa
Bay County.
The respected scholar, who served as Director of the School
of Mathematics and Statistics at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), was
hacked to death by two assailants armed with pangas.
According to authorities, Mboya was hacked to death by two
young men following a land dispute involving alleged encroachment by neighbors.
The professor had sought assistance from the area chief and
a land surveyor to resolve the boundary conflict.
However, he and his father visited the disputed land ahead
of the officials, where they were ambushed.
Armed with pangas, the attackers inflicted fatal head
injuries on Mboya, killing him on the spot.
His father also sustained injuries and was rushed to Mbita
Sub-County Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Mbita Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Peter Mutiso confirmed
the suspects fled the scene and that police have launched a manhunt.
Mboya’s body was taken to MED 25 Kirindo Mortuary for
preservation.
The incident has sparked outrage, with Mbita MP, Millie
Odhiambo, condemning the killing and calling for swift justice.
“The murder of Professor Thomas Mboya of Rusinga Island is
unfortunate.”
“Violence never sorts out issues,” she said.
“May the killer and any persons who may have aided or
abetted in his death be brought to book.”
Professor Mboya was widely admired in academic circles for
his contributions to mathematics education and mentorship.
His death marks a tragic loss for the education sector and
raises fresh concerns over land-related violence in the region.
