Wednesday, October 1, 2025 - Veteran comedian and media personality, Walter Mong’are, famously known as Nyambane, recently opened up about a jaw-dropping moment from his radio career that cost him KSh 21 million.
Speaking on the Tubonge Podcast hosted by Chris The
Bass, Mong’are recounted a lawsuit filed by politician Martha Karua during his
time co-hosting a morning show with Caroline Mutoko.
According to Mong’are, the incident stemmed from a heated
on-air moment where Mutoko expressed strong views about Karua.
“Caroline and I were on air
one morning, and I think she was very upset with Martha Karua, and
whatever happened that morning, I never said anything that would get me to the
corridors of justice, but Martha Karua sued us and we paid her Ksh 21 million,”
Nyambane recalled
Though he claims he didn’t say anything defamatory, both he
and Mutoko were sued individually.
“I told her to let it go, but the damage was done,” he said,
describing the experience as “taking a shot for your partner.”
Despite the costly legal battle, he revealed that he and
Karua now occasionally meet to discuss national matters - though he’s never
brought up the incident.
Before his radio days, Nyambane rose to fame as part of the
iconic political satire group Redykyulass, alongside Tony and KJ.
Known for impersonating the President, Mong’are used comedy
to reflect societal issues with wit and depth.
The group eventually shifted focus in 2005, encouraging
youth civic engagement through art and music.
Mong’are later transitioned into leadership, serving as a Youth
Advisor to President Uhuru Kenyatta from 2017 to 2022.
