29, 2025 - Firebrand Suba North MP, Millie Odhiambo, has reignited the
dowry debate after sharing her personal views on why she’s firmly against the
practice.
While reacting to the recent public fallout between
influencer Cebbie Koks and her estranged husband, lawyer Steve Ogolla, who sent
friends to collect cows he had paid as dowry, Millie said she has never
supported dowry payments.
"I
rarely comment on people's personal lives, but I hope you see why I refused
dowry payment for me.”
“When I
love a man, a simple word of 'I love you and I commit to you' suffices."
She stated that dowry commodifies women and reinforces
outdated gender norms.
"An
exchange of vows publicly shows commitment to stay together.”
“But
equating my worth to cows is a no no for me. I respect those who choose that
path, though.”
“It's
just not a thing for me.”
Millie, known for her unapologetic stance on women’s rights,
said that while she respects cultural traditions, she believes marriage should
be built on mutual respect - not transactions.
Millie, who is married to a Zimbabwean national by the name Magugu
Mabona, revealed that she refused dowry payment from her husband.
“If you want to marry me, come with your heart, not your
wallet,” she added.
Her comments sparked a wave of reactions online, with many
praising her for challenging societal norms.
Others, however, defended dowry as a cultural rite that
honors family ties and heritage.
