MATIANG’I addresses MIGUNA’s deportation drama when he was Interior CS in UHURU’s Government - “Refused to Cooperate”

Wednesday, October 29, 2025 - Former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has defended his role in the controversial deportation of lawyer Miguna Miguna in 2018.

Speaking to a local radio station on Wednesday, October 29th, 2025, Matiang’i dismissed accusations that he personally engineered Miguna’s deportation, insisting that the fiery lawyer “created drama for nothing.”

He clarified that the Government never intended to deny Miguna his rightful Kenyan citizenship but that Miguna “refused to cooperate.”

“Miguna Miguna’s issue was straightforward.”

“Justice Lenaola’s ruling had outlined how to regain citizenship after renouncing it, since the old constitution didn’t allow dual nationality.”

“We created a simple form at the Immigration Department, but Miguna refused to sign it, choosing instead to create drama at the airport,” Matiang’i explained.

Miguna’s troubles began after he participated in the mock swearing-in of the late ODM leader and NASA presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, at Uhuru Park following the disputed 2017 elections.

The former CS emphasized that every individual, regardless of social or political standing, must follow the law.

“No one in this country is above the law.”

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes; you must be investigated.”

“No one holds public office forever, even if you try to sit on those investigative files,” Matiang’i stated.
