2025 - Former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, has urged leaders
from the Nyanza region to remain united in honour of the late Raila Odinga,
describing it as the ultimate tribute to the former Prime Minister’s legacy.
Speaking in Homa Bay County, Matiang’i praised Raila as a
father figure who embraced all communities across Nyanza with warmth and
inclusivity.
“Raila had a way of keeping people together.”
“Whether you’re from Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay or Kisumu, he
treated us all as his children,” Matiang’i said.
“Now is the time to pay the ultimate tribute to him by
remaining together as family, because that is what he wanted.”
He recalled Raila’s deep ties to Kisii and Nyamira counties,
noting that the ODM leader had close friendships in the region and would often
spend nights in local homes.
Matiang’i pledged to work with fellow leaders to uphold the
unity Raila championed.
Raila Odinga passed away on October 15th after
suffering a cardiac arrest during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic facility in
India.
He was laid to rest on October 19th at Kang’o Ka
Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, in a private ceremony attended by family and
national leaders.
ODM is now under the interim leadership of Raila’s elder
brother, Oburu Odinga.
