Thursday, September 11, 2025 - Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has clarified her position regarding her appointment as Vice Chair of President William Ruto’s Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Riots.
In a statement issued on Thursday morning, Odhiambo revealed
that she has yet to meet with the panel and emphasized that she does not serve
the Government.
“I respect the rule of law and abide by the orders given by
the High Court,” she stated, referring to the court’s suspension of the panel
pending a petition challenging its constitutionality.
“I do not work for the Government of Kenya nor the
opposition; my call is to serve the people of Kenya and my learned colleagues
at the Law Society of Kenya.”
Odhiambo affirmed her commitment to advocating for victims
of protest-related violence, including those injured, killed or charged for
exercising their right to picket.
She vowed to continue consulting widely and listening to
victims’ voices in pursuit of justice.
"To
this end, I am consulting widely on this cause while keenly listening to the
voices of the victims and those who still suffer in search of justice,"
the statement read in part.
She also urged the Office of the Director of Public
Prosecutions (ODPP) to review terrorism charges leveled against protesters and
instead prosecute police officers responsible for unlawful shootings.
The LSK, she added, will continue offering pro bono
legal support to victims of police brutality.
Her appointment last month sparked criticism from lawyers
and the public, with concerns that her role on the panel compromises her
independence.
Advocate Levi Munyeri has since filed a petition demanding
her resignation, threatening further legal action if she fails to step down.
