Tuesday, September 23, 2025 - Cooperatives and SMEs Cabinet Secretary, Wycliffe Oparanya, has dismissed claims of a political fallout with Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.
Speaking on Monday, September 22nd, Oparanya
clarified that his focus remains on national duties.
“What is there for me to be involved with in Kakamega? I
have enough work as a Cabinet Secretary.”
“There is no fallout. We are not rivals,” he said, adding
that he supports any development initiatives that benefit the people of
Kakamega.
His remarks come in the wake of a High Court ruling that
nullified the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (ODPP) decision to
withdraw corruption charges against him.
Justice Benjamin Musyoki, in a judgment delivered on
September 16th, declared the ODPP’s July 8th, 2024, move
as irregular and unconstitutional.
The case was initiated by activist Fredrick Mulaa, who
challenged the ODPP’s decision to close the file despite recommendations from
the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to prosecute.
Justice Musyoki faulted the ODPP for accepting fresh
evidence from Oparanya’s legal team without consulting the EACC.
“The ODPP usurped the powers of the EACC and acted beyond
its constitutional mandate,” Musyoki ruled, issuing a writ of certiorari to
quash the decision.
