Nairobi man accused of distributing pirated Nation Media e-papers via WhatsApp released on bond

Thursday, August 28, 2025 - A Nairobi court has released a man accused of illegally distributing pirated digital copies of Nation Media Group newspapers through WhatsApp.

Jackson Wangigi Kariuki was arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo at the Milimani Law Courts, where he was granted a personal bond of Ksh 100,000.

The decision followed a medical report indicating that he might not be mentally fit to stand trial.

The prosecution requested additional time to allow Kariuki’s mother to present his medical history at a mental health facility, after an earlier psychiatric examination proved inconclusive.

Kariuki is accused of unlawfully distributing digital copies of Daily Nation, Taifa Leo, Business Daily and The East African via a WhatsApp group named “Daily E-Paper Forum” without authorization from Nation Media Group.

The alleged offences reportedly took place between June 3rd and June 10th, 2025, at an undisclosed location in Kenya.

He also faces a separate charge of unlawfully offering infringing copies of the newspapers for sale.

Kariuki denied all the charges.

Magistrate Onsarigo directed that a comprehensive mental health report be submitted to the court by September 8th, 2025, before further proceedings continue.
