Monday, March 24, 2025 - Football fans from all walks of life packed Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday for Kenya’s World Cup qualifier against Gabon, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the home team.
However, the match was not just about football - it became a
platform for political expression.
At one point, thousands of fans broke into chants of “Ruto
Must Go,” signaling growing frustration, particularly among Gen Z Kenyans,
despite the formation of the broad-based Government.
A standout moment was when the DJ played the iconic Kasongo hit,
igniting a stadium-wide singalong.
The 1977 classic by Orchestre Super Mazembe has recently
gained popularity as a protest anthem.
Originally about a woman seeking reassurance from her
husband, Gen Zs have repurposed it as a rallying cry against President Ruto.
The match reflected more than just Kenya’s loss on the pitch
- it showcased the deepening social and political grievances of an increasingly
vocal generation.
