Man suspected of leading a gang that waylays victims and robs them after withdrawing huge sums of money from banks arrested - They pose as traffic police officers

Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Detectives have arrested a suspect believed to be linked to a gang that ambushes unsuspecting victims after they withdraw large sums of money from banks.

The gang reportedly poses as traffic police officers, using the authority of police uniforms to waylay victims moments after they leave banking halls.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a team of detectives drawn from the Operation Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) conducted investigations that led to the suspects' arrest.

Through intelligence gathering and forensic analysis, detectives identified four key suspects believed to be connected to the robberies.

Among them is Muia Mutune, alias Fredrick Mbuta, who was previously arrested in April 2026 over similar cases before being released on bond in July.

Detectives continued pursuing leads until intelligence placed the suspect in Embakasi Village, where he was subsequently arrested.

He is currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of arraignment as detectives intensify efforts to track down his alleged accomplices, who remain at large.

The DCI has urged the public to remain vigilant, reiterating its commitment to pursuing violent criminals and protecting members of the public.
