Senior DCI officer robbed outside a high-end city hotel as insecurity escalates in the country

Thursday, August 6, 2026 - A senior Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer has fallen victim to theft after criminals broke into his parked vehicle outside a high-end hotel in Mombasa and made away with property worth more than Sh250,000.

According to a police Occurrence Book (OB) report filed at Tononoka Police Station, the incident occurred on Tuesday night outside the Holiday Inn Hotel, opposite Mombasa Stadium.

The targeted vehicle, a black Isuzu, belongs to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Bernard Barasa Walumoli, the Director of Planning at the DCI Headquarters in Nairobi.

The suspects broke into the vehicle and stole a HP laptop, a laptop charger, a computer mouse, a presentation pointer, and a wallet containing several official and personal documents.

Among the stolen documents were a certificate of appointment, a police driving permit, a driving licence, a national identity card, an ATM card, a KAPS card, and assorted clothing.

The officer's driver also lost a bag containing assorted clothing, shoes, and a fast charger valued at Sh4,500.

Police officers and DCI Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel visited the scene, processed and documented the break-in, and launched investigations to identify the suspects, recover the stolen property, and bring those responsible to justice.
