GACHAGUA launches scathing attack against President RUTO over arrest of Mukurweini MP JOHN KAGUCHIA – “Cowardly and Counterproductive”

Monday, August 03, 2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the arrest of Mukurweini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia, describing it as a misuse of the criminal justice system to persecute political rivals.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, Gachagua accused the government of selectively applying the law to manage politics, branding the move “cowardly and counterproductive.” 

He insisted that Kaguchia’s detention would not dim his influence but instead elevate his standing among leaders from the Mount Kenya region.

“The overnight harassment and early morning arrest of Hon. John Kaguchia has only strengthened the resolve of our supporters and elevated his position within our leadership hierarchy,” Gachagua said, adding that a team of lawyers had been deployed to secure his release on bond.

The former DP also took aim at President William Ruto, recalling how he once criticized retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration for arbitrarily arresting politicians allied to him ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Gachagua argued that Ruto had benefited politically from such persecution when he was Deputy President, yet now appeared to be repeating the same tactics.

He further suggested that the problem might lie within State House itself, questioning why leaders change once they assume the presidency.

Kaguchia was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after spending the night at Royal Media Services offices. 

He was later taken to DCI headquarters for questioning, with his legal team claiming they were denied access to him.
