- Social media users have reacted strongly after a list of dowry demands
presented to a man intending to marry a Kikuyu lady surfaced online.
The viral list details various items, livestock and large
cash payments that the groom-to-be is expected to provide before officially
marrying the woman through a traditional ceremony.
Among the demands that sparked widespread debate is a
requirement for Ksh 500,000 meant for goats, leaving many Kenyans stunned.
The demands quickly triggered heated reactions online, with
some netizens accusing the bride’s family of turning dowry negotiations into a
commercial venture.
“This is extortion,” one social media user commented after
seeing the list.
Another user wrote, “I am not paying even a quarter of this
for a Murima babe. Hii ni quotation ya Mtaita or a traditional woman from those
marginalized tribes.”
“Don’t pay for what others got for free,” another netizen
sarcastically added.
However, some people defended the practice, arguing that
dowry is an important cultural tradition that should be respected and
negotiated based on mutual understanding between families.
Others noted that exaggerated dowry demands are becoming increasingly common and may discourage young people from formalizing marriages through traditional ceremonies.
