Tuesday, June 02,
2026 - Amid a raging national debate over the presence of CCTV cameras
inside Utumishi Girls Academy dormitories, a parent whose daughter studies at
the school has come forward to defend the surveillance system.
In an anonymous Facebook post, the parent disclosed that her
daughter was among those injured in the recent dormitory fire, explained that
the cameras were installed after repeated reports of theft, bullying and
misconduct, with parents giving their approval in the hope of improving safety
within the boarding facilities.
The parent alleged that some troubling incidents involved
older students mistreating younger learners in shower areas, leaving many girls
feeling vulnerable.
She further claimed that students had noticed suspicious
activity in spaces where towels or other items were used to block camera views.
Her comments come as CCTV footage has become central to
investigations into the fire that killed 16 students and left several injured.
Detectives are reportedly relying on surveillance recordings
to identify suspects linked to the tragedy.
The use of cameras inside dormitories has since sparked a
heated national conversation amid privacy concerns.
