Monday, May 25, 2026 - Former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has appointed Nyandarua Senator, John Methu, as the new Secretary General of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), replacing Hezron Obaga.
The announcement was made on Monday, May 25th,
during a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi. Gachagua
explained that Methu would serve as the party’s spokesperson and lead
campaigns, beginning with the Ol Kalou parliamentary by‑elections slated for
July 16th.
“Senator John Methu is a DCP party member, and he
will start acting as the Secretary General designate and spokesperson of DCP on
all matters from today,” he said.
Gachagua declared, adding that his name would be forwarded
to the Registrar of Political Parties for formal recognition.
The decision followed a resolution by the party’s National
Executive Committee (NEC).
While Gachagua did not disclose reasons for Obaga’s removal,
the founding member had served as SG since May 2025 when DCP was formed.
Gachagua highlighted the party’s rapid growth, claiming that
over 4 million members and more than 10,000 aspirants registered to vie for
positions in the 2027 elections.
He assured aspirants of free and fair nominations.
Methu has been tasked with delivering victory in Ol Kalou
and recruiting 10 million members ahead of 2027.
“NEC has given Senator Methu the mandate to lead
the by‑elections in Ol Kalou and deliver a decisive victory to DCP,”
Gachagua said.
However, Methu’s appointment could face legal hurdles, as he
was elected on a UDA ticket.
Accepting the role, Methu referenced President William
Ruto’s 2022 transition from Jubilee to UDA leadership as precedent.
