Monday, March 30, 2026 - The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) has confirmed the death of Kisumu‑based professional boxer, Jacob Oyoko, who passed away following an incident during a bout on Saturday, March 28th.
In a statement, KPBC explained that emergency medical
protocols were immediately followed ringside.
“The boxer received physician care, CPR, oxygen, and was
transferred to hospital. The ringside physician will submit a full medical
report,” the commission noted.
Sadly, efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
KPBC described Oyoko as a dedicated athlete whose passing is
a devastating loss to his family and the entire boxing fraternity.
To uncover the circumstances surrounding his death, KPBC has
formed an independent review committee comprising medical experts, legal
professionals and senior boxing officials.
A full post‑mortem has been requested, with investigations
set to examine pre‑fight medical screening, weight management, hydration
protocols, ringside response, and referee decisions.
However, videos>>> circulating online show Oyoko appearing
defenseless against his opponent.
Shockingly, the referee did not stop the fight, and his
coaching team failed to throw in the towel to protect him from unnecessary
punishment.
In their misguided wisdom, they seemed to believe fans
should get their money’s worth.
Tragically, the cost of that entertainment was a young man’s
life.
