2026 - Public Health Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni, has set the record
straight after a TikTok clip she shared on Saturday, March 7th, 2026
crying went viral.
In a TV interview, Muthoni clarified that the video was not
about tears but reflection.
“Surely mimi nakaa mama wa kulia?”
“Away from jokes now. We all meditate differently.”
“And we all have our different reflections,” she
said, stressing that people express moments of meditation in unique ways.
The PS explained that her role in public health comes with
immense responsibility, often leaving her with heavy thoughts.
“And I can tell you for a fact, having worked in public
health, I have too many reflections to do.”
“Every day, by the way, I worry about somebody else,”
she noted.
She pointed to recent flooding incidents as one of the
issues weighing on her mind.
“The other day I saw people being swept by the floods,”
she recalled, describing the devastation of seeing livelihoods destroyed.
Muthoni emphasized that the viral clip should not be
misinterpreted.
“I wasn’t crying. I want to say we reflect differently. I
wasn’t crying,” she reiterated.
She added that Saturday was particularly difficult, as many
Kenyans were struggling after floods swept away kiosks and businesses.
“Saturday was a sad day. It is when people did not have
anything to eat, probably because their kiosks had been swept away,” she
said.
