Monday, March 09,
2026 - The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has unveiled the
Instant Fines Traffic Management System, a fully automated platform designed to
issue traffic violation notices directly to motorists via SMS.
In a public notice released on Monday, March 9th,
NTSA confirmed that the system is now live and will detect and process
violations without any human involvement.
According to the authority, “the system will automatically
issue traffic violation notifications via SMS to motorists where applicable…
ensuring greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in traffic
enforcement.”
Motorists who receive fines will be required to pay through
KCB Group branches within seven days.
NTSA warned that failure to settle penalties within the
stipulated period will attract interest on the outstanding amount.
Additionally, any vehicle or driver with pending fines will
be unable to access NTSA services until all dues are cleared.
“Failure to settle the fine due within the 7-day period will
result in the amount due earning interest… the vehicle or the driver with
pending fine will not be able to transact on NTSA service platforms until the
fine is settled,” the notice added.
The rollout follows President William Ruto’s directive last
week ordering the installation of speed cameras across major towns and their
integration with instant fines.
Speaking at State House Nairobi on March 2nd, the
President said the move will streamline enforcement and eliminate disputes with
offenders, noting that camera evidence will provide clear proof of violations.
The introduction of this automated system is also seen as a
major blow to corrupt traffic police officers who have long been accused of
extorting motorists, as it removes human discretion and seals loopholes
previously exploited for bribes.
