Former Senator KHANIRI recalls final phone call with late CYRUS JIRONGO - “I think I must be among the last people to speak to him on phone”

Tuesday, December 30, 2025 - Former Vihiga County Senator, George Khaniri, has revealed that he may have been among the last people to speak with the late politician and businessman, Cyrus Jirongo, before his untimely death.

Speaking during Jirongo’s burial ceremony in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025, Khaniri gave a moving account of his final phone conversation with the former Lugari MP.

“I think I must be among the last people to speak to him on the phone,” Khaniri told mourners, adding that the call took place around 11:00 pm, just hours before the tragic accident.

He said the conversation lasted about three minutes.

Khaniri recalled asking Jirongo where he was at the time, to which the former legislator responded with words that now carry a haunting weight: “Niko mahali uliniacha” (I am where you left me).

According to Khaniri, Jirongo was seated at Oasis in Karen, Nairobi.

Later that night, Khaniri passed by the location and saw him with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and two other individuals.

“Mheshimiwa Jirongo alikuwa ameketi pale na ndugu yangu Spika Wetang’ula na wengine wawili,” he said, noting that he did not join them as he had other commitments.

Jirongo’s life was cut short in a road accident on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, at Karai along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

Rift Valley Regional Traffic Commander Sara Chumo confirmed the accident occurred at around 3:00 am when Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a bus.

He sustained fatal head injuries and died instantly.
