2025 - CNN international correspondent, Larry Madowo, has pledged to
investigate the alleged mass killings and human rights abuses that followed
Tanzania’s disputed presidential election, which opposition figures have
branded a “sham.”
In a video appeal shared on November 6th, 2025,
Madowo called on Tanzanians to submit original, uncirculated footage
documenting the violence, saying his team is preparing a special CNN report to
uncover the truth behind the unrest.
“This is an appeal to Tanzanians. Please tell me what you
saw. My inbox is open,” Madowo said.
He emphasized that many local journalists had been silenced,
and that international media access had been severely restricted by the Government.
The appeal comes amid conflicting reports on the death toll.
Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, claims that over
1,000 people - including some Kenyans - were killed in protests across
Dar-es-Salaam, Mwanza and other regions.
The unrest erupted after opposition candidates were barred
from contesting key seats, sparking mass demonstrations met with heavy
crackdowns.
Witnesses reported gunfire, fires, and internet blackouts as
security forces moved in.
Madowo’s investigation aims to give voice to victims and
expose the scale of alleged abuses.
Despite being barred from reporting inside Tanzania due to
restrictive media laws, Madowo said his team would pursue the story from
outside the country, relying on citizen evidence to build a truthful account.
