Wednesday, October 29, 2025 - Dennis Onyango, longtime aide to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has opened up on the final months of the opposition leader’s life.
In a YouTube interview aired on October 29th,
2025, Onyango revealed that Raila had sensed his time was nearing long before
his passing on October 15th.
“I’m one of those who pushed him to take a break,” Onyango
said. “More than a year earlier, I could tell - Baba knew his time was up.”
It was in his tone, his instructions, his quiet
reflections.”
Onyango recounted their trip to Germany in February 2024,
where Raila revisited his academic past.
“He kept asking, ‘Did you bring your notebook?’ He wanted
everything documented.”
“It was clear he was tying up loose ends.”
During the visit, Raila confirmed his university
credentials, with professors acknowledging him as one of the top performers.
Onyango described the trip as a moment of deep
introspection, a man reflecting on his legacy and preparing for closure.
“He wasn’t just reminiscing - he was winding down,” Onyango
said.
“It was the wisdom that comes with age.”
“He knew.”
Raila passed away on October 15th at the age of
80 while undergoing treatment in India.
He was reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest during his
morning walk.
