24, 2025 - Mogadishu City Football Club has issued a formal apology to
Kenyans following outrage over a viral video showing its supporters desecrating
the national flag at Nyayo National Stadium.
The incident occurred during the CAF Champions League
first-leg clash between Mogadishu City FC and Kenya Police FC on September 20th,
2025.
In one clip, two fans were seen trampling and kicking the
Kenyan flag.
Another video showed a supporter in traditional Somali
attire snatching a flag from a Kenya Police FC fan and tossing it to the
ground.
The footage sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for
disciplinary action against those involved.
In a statement, Mogadishu City FC distanced itself from the
individuals and condemned the behavior.
“We strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest
apologies to the Government and People of Kenya,” the club said, emphasizing
that such actions undermine the spirit of sportsmanship and unity.
The club also expressed support for any action taken by
Kenyan authorities and urged fans to respect all nations and their symbols.
“Football is a game of unity, love, and mutual respect,” the
statement added.
Kenya Police FC won the match 3-1 and will host the second
leg in Kenya.
The winner will face Sudan’s Al Hilal SC in the next round.
