2025 - The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has suffered a major setback
ahead of the Magarini by-election following the resignation of its candidate,
Hon. Furaha Chengo Ngumbao.
In a letter dated Monday, September 29th, Chengo,
who also served on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), cited
frustrations and lack of institutional support as the reason for his abrupt
departure.
“This decision has not been taken lightly,” Chengo wrote.
“But I can no longer continue in a role where my efforts are
undermined by systemic inefficiencies and a lack of support from key party
officials.”
While expressing admiration for party leader, Rigathi
Gachagua’s vision, Chengo condemned the conduct of the National Elections Board
and the Secretary-General, accusing them of poor communication and disregard
for grassroots concerns.
He described the internal environment as “discouraging,”
with aspirants left to navigate critical issues without guidance.
Chengo also criticized opaque decision-making and the
marginalization of NEC members, warning that such practices threaten the
party’s credibility.
He urged DCP to embrace reforms that prioritize
transparency, inclusivity and accountability.
His resignation comes just days after DCP denied claims of
withdrawing from the upcoming Malava constituency by-election.
Deputy Party Leader, Cleophas Malala, reaffirmed the party’s
commitment to fielding Wakili Edgar Busiega Mwanga as its candidate, despite
ongoing opposition coalition talks.
The twin developments raise questions about internal
cohesion within DCP as it prepares for key electoral contests.
