“I Can Be Elected Without a Party,” Bullish BABU OWINO declares and sends a bold message to ODM

Friday, August 29, 2025 - Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, has sensationally declared that his personal brand is bigger than most political parties in Kenya, insisting that he does not need a party to win an election.

Speaking on Friday, August 29th, the outspoken legislator said his popularity and influence are enough to secure him victory.

“The name Babu Owino, isn’t it bigger than almost 100% of the political parties in this country?”

“So, Babu Owino alone is a political party; Babu Owino can be elected without a party,” he stated.

Despite the bold claim, Owino defended his loyalty to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), dismissing suggestions that he and other outspoken members are rebels.

“We are not rebelling in ODM. Raila Odinga himself said members are allowed to speak and be democratically correct.”

“Majority will have their way, but the minority must also have their say,” he said.

He accused ODM MPs who heckled party leader, Raila Odinga, during a joint parliamentary group (PG) meeting with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on August 18th of being the true rebels.

“Those who booed Raila are the rebels. We chose not to attend because we knew what was being planned,” Owino added.

At the contentious PG, Raila faced repeated jeers as he reminded MPs that parliament’s constitutional role is representation, legislation, and oversight - not implementing projects.

He also stressed that Kenya only recognizes two levels of devolution: national and County Governments.

Despite interruptions, Raila urged MPs to respect debate and dialogue:

“I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend your right until death. So listen to me.”
