Friday, July 11, 2025 - A symbolic tree planted by the late Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wangari Maathai, in Karura Forest was found cut down, in what conservationists are calling a heartbreaking act of environmental vandalism.
The tree, which stood as a living testament to Maathai’s
fierce legacy in defending forests and public land, was reportedly cut down as powerful
cartels in Ruto’s Government move to
illegally
grab parts of the protected forest.
A heartbreaking photo of the
felled tree has gone viral, sparking outrage online and calls for immediate
intervention by the Ministry of Environment and the Kenya Forest Service.
Karura Forest, once saved from destruction by Maathai’s Green Belt Movement, now faces renewed threats as private developers slowly encroach on its boundaries.
