Wednesday, June 25, 2025 - Several protesters were injured on Wednesday, June 25th, after demonstrations in Matuu, Machakos County, turned violent, with police reportedly opening fire on crowds.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when a group
of youthful demonstrators approached Matuu Police Station, allegedly attempting
to breach the premises.
Officers responded with live ammunition in an effort to
disperse the crowd, resulting in chaos.
A boda boda rider at the scene described hearing
gunfire before protesters scattered in panic.
“I saw people running and others crying in pain,” he
recounted.
Images from the scene showed damaged sections of the police
station and panicked crowds.
Several injured protesters were rushed to local medical
facilities, including Matuu Level 4 Hospital and nearby private clinics.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) condemned the
police response, accusing officers of using excessive force against peaceful
demonstrators.
“Police in Matuu opened fire on peaceful protesters, killing
one and injuring eight others,” KHRC said.
“Three victims are receiving care at a private clinic, while
four are admitted at Matuu Level 4 Hospital.”
The Matuu protest was part of a larger nationwide
demonstration commemorating victims of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
In Nairobi and other towns, clashes between protesters and
police were reported throughout the day.
