Wednesday, June 25, 2025 - The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), backed by police officers, on Wednesday raided transmission stations in Limuru, disrupting signals for NTV, KTN, and Citizen TV.
This came after the three stations defied a directive
banning live coverage of the ongoing Gen Z-led protests across the country.
According to Nation Media Group (NMG), NTV’s free-to-air
signal was taken off, though its broadcasts remained accessible on digital
platforms like YouTube.
KTN News also confirmed the shutdown of its terrestrial
signal, noting that coverage continued on social media.
Citizen TV was still on air at the time of the initial
reports, but later confirmed that CA officials and armed officers had arrived
at its Limuru transmission site, eventually disrupting its signal too.
The blackout means viewers without satellite TV
subscriptions lost access to the stations via Signet, Pang, and other
free-to-air decoders.
The move followed CA’s warning earlier in the day, stating
that continued live coverage of the protests violated Articles 33(2) and 34(1)
of the Constitution.
However, media houses and rights groups insist the directive
is illegal, citing a 2023 High Court ruling that gives sole regulatory power
over content to the Media Council of Kenya - not CA.
All three stations vowed to continue streaming coverage
online.
