Friday, March 14, 2025 - Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, alongside a group of prominent African political figures, was denied entry into Angola in an unexpected turn of events.
The delegation had traveled to Luanda at the invitation of
Angola’s main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence
of Angola (UNITA), to attend a two-day meeting.
However, upon arrival, Angolan immigration authorities
blocked them, barring their entry.
Expressing his frustration on X, Senator Sifuna stated,
“UNITA President Adalberto Costa invited us to Angola. The government has
denied us entry!”
Following their expulsion, Sifuna confirmed his safe return
to Addis Ababa and extended gratitude to the Kenyan Mission in Luanda, led by
Ambassador Joyce Mmaitsi.
“You guys are great,” he noted, before highlighting the
plight of over 20 detained leaders from various nations, including Tanzania
(9), Botswana (5), Lesotho (3), Malawi (2), Eswatini (1), Germany (1), the UK
(2), and South Africa (2).
He called on Angolan authorities to release them
immediately, criticizing their treatment, particularly as Angola currently
chairs the African Union.
Tanzania’s opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, condemned the
move as “unacceptable,” pointing out that the detained delegation included
high-profile figures such as a First Vice President of Tanzania, a former
President of Botswana, and a former Prime Minister of Lesotho.
Other representatives hailed from Kenya, Sudan, South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini, Germany, the USA, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Mozambique.
