Ex-Migori Governor OKOTH OBADO, his former aides MICHAEL OYAMO and CASPAL OBIERO found guilty of SHARON OTIENO’s murder.

Thursday, July 23, 2026 - The High Court has found former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his ex‑personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and Caspal Obiero guilty of the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

Delivering judgment, Lady Justice Cecilia Githua ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against the three beyond reasonable doubt.

The court held that the evidence demonstrated the accused acted in concert, each playing a distinct role in the crime.

Obado was found to have financed the murder, Oyamo executed key aspects of the plan, while Obiero helped conceal the offence.

Their actions, the judge said, revealed a common intention and malice aforethought.

Justice Githua dismissed Obado’s defence that his absence from Migori County on the day of the killing absolved him of responsibility, noting evidence showed he was involved in planning and facilitating the murder while in Nairobi.

Rejecting Obado’s claim that he had accepted Sharon’s pregnancy and supported her financially, the judge described the assertion as insincere.

“I am persuaded to agree that to eradicate the imminent threat of having the possibility of his name or reputation dragged through the mud by publication in the mainstream media of this relationship with Sharon, the first accused instigated a scheme to eliminate Sharon, and using his influence as the Governor of Migori County, he enlisted the services of his trusted aides: the second accused, who was his Personal Assistant,” she ruled.

The court concluded that overwhelming evidence linked all three accused to Sharon’s death, establishing every element of the offence of murder.

Consequently, Obado, Oyamo, and Obiero were convicted, marking a dramatic end to one of Kenya’s most closely watched murder trials.

Obado and his co-accused will be remanded at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison after the judge cancelled their bonds ahead of sentencing.
