Wednesday, March 25, 2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly rejected President William Ruto’s allegations that he extorted businesspeople during the fight against illicit alcohol.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 25th,
Gachagua defended his record, saying that under his stewardship, the war
against drugs and substance abuse was “70 percent won.”
He claimed that young men had stopped consuming illicit
alcohol because it was no longer available.
“You were angry that an entire generation had been saved.”
“You used Mr. Kindiki and Raymond Omollo to frustrate the
success,” Gachagua said, accusing ex-Interior Cabinet Secretary and now Deputy President,
Kithure Kindiki, and Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo of undermining his
efforts.
The DCP party leader further alleged that President Ruto
appointed drug barons to his Cabinet, turning Kenya into an international drug
transit hub.
He added that he had repeatedly pleaded with the Head of
State not to sabotage his initiatives, even confronting him publicly during a
church service in Nyandarua in July 2024.
The remarks come just days after President Ruto, speaking in
Homa Bay County, accused his former deputy of failing in key assignments.
Ruto claimed Gachagua aligned himself with cartels in the
coffee sector and engaged in extortion while purporting to fight illicit
alcohol.
“He said he was fighting illicit alcohol, but he ended up
becoming an extortionist, extorting people who run businesses,” Ruto stated,
adding that Gachagua lacked the capacity to lead.
