2026 - Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu
Oginga, has dismissed claims that he is targeting Deputy
President Kithure Kindiki’s position amid ODM-UDA 2027
coalition talks.
Speaking during a NYOTA disbursement event in Kisumu
on Monday, February 2nd, Oginga emphasized that Kindiki’s role in Government
was secure, even as coalition talks between ODM and President William Ruto’s
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) intensify.
“As we move forward, we are not going to look for less.”
“However, Mr. Deputy President, do not think that we want
your seat or that we want to kick you out,” Oginga said.
“Please, you are our friend, but as we negotiate, we are
going to negotiate what our people deserve.”
His remarks come against the backdrop of a past interview in
which Oginga had listed the Deputy President’s position as one of ODM’s
irreducible minimums in any coalition agreement ahead of the 2027 General
Elections.
At the time, he insisted ODM should not settle for anything
less than the number two slot in Government.
That earlier statement sparked debate over Kindiki’s
prospects of retaining his role as Ruto’s running mate, given that he only
ascended to the position after the impeachment of his predecessor, Rigathi
Gachagua.
Senior ODM officials, including national chairperson Gladys
Wanga, have publicly pushed for a 50-50
power-sharing deal with UDA, signaling a strong appetite for
top Government positions.
