Wednesday, December 24, 2025 - Suba South Member of Parliament, Caroli Omondi, has set the stage for a dramatic political shift, announcing that he will not seek re-election under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in 2027.
Omondi revealed that he intends to defend his seat through a
new political outfit, signaling a break from the party that propelled him to
Parliament in 2022.
“It is not my intention to seek re-election on an ODM
ticket.”
“I think I will run for re-election on a different party… it
will be a new party,” he said, leaving the details of the outfit for later.
Omondi expressed doubts about ODM’s ability to conduct
credible nominations, claiming that zoning rules will lock out aspirants in
strongholds.
He pointed to past cases, such as Kasipul, as evidence of
what he believes is a flawed system.
“People must have choices,” he emphasized.
The MP also raised concerns about ODM’s leadership direction
following the death of Raila Odinga.
He noted that Oburu Oginga was quickly appointed acting
leader without wider consultation, suggesting external influence.
“That worried me because it seems ODM is getting directions
and control from somewhere else,” he remarked.
Beyond internal wrangles, Omondi criticized ODM’s current
leadership for straying from the ideological foundations on which the party was
built.
He described it as “short-termist, interested in imagery,
and not characterized by deep thinking.”
Omondi, who succeeded John Mbadi in 2022, previously served
as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister (2008–2013).
In 2023, he was among ODM MPs threatened with expulsion
after meeting President William Ruto, though a court order shielded them from
removal.
