2025 - Outspoken Suba North Member of Parliament, Millie Odhiambo, has
defended Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for
distancing themselves from President William Ruto’s broad-based Government.
Speaking on Monday, November 17th, Odhiambo said
urban politics are typically oppositionist, and aligning with Government risks
alienating their support base.
“Is Nairobi predominantly broad-based? Of course not. Urban
politics anywhere in the world are usually very oppositionist in nature,” she
explained.
Odhiambo noted that while she can comfortably advocate for
broad-based politics in her Suba North constituency, Nairobi presents a
different dynamic.
She added that politics is about interests, and leaders must
balance national agendas with the expectations of their voters.
The vocal legislator also highlighted the ethnic dimension
of Kenyan politics, stressing that ethnicity continues to shape political
support even in urban areas.
“Let us be realistic about the nature of our politics in
Kenya; it is very ethnic based,” she said, warning that leaders risk losing
backing if they shift positions without considering community dynamics.
Babu and Sifuna have previously skipped joint ODM and UDA
parliamentary meetings chaired by President Ruto and the late ODM leader, Raila
Odinga.
On October 30th, Sifuna cautioned ODM members
against casually using the term “Broad-Based”.
He accused some leaders of
invoking the term loosely to advance personal interests without adhering to its
core principles.
“It has become fashionable for
people to throw around this thing.”
“Every single discussion that
comes up, ‘we are broad-based.’
“I want to remind them that
broad-based is built on a 10-point agenda,” Sifuna stated.
