2025 - Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has called out ODM Secretary-General
Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, warning that their personal
ambitions and premature 2027 political manoeuvres risk fracturing party unity.
Speaking on Monday, October 27th, 2025, Oketch
expressed concern that internal ODM disputes are increasingly driven by
individual positioning rather than public service.
“Some of our leaders seem more consumed by 2027 than by the
welfare of Kenyans. Leadership should be about delivery, not just positioning,”
he said.
He cited recent progress under the Raila-Ruto ten-point
agenda - including the resolution of university strikes and disbursement of
capitation funds - as evidence that leaders should focus on results, not
political posturing.
“Stop panicking about 2027. Let us focus on the ten-point agenda between
Raila and Ruto. Let citizens see results before we start evaluating politics
for the next election,” he urged.
Oketch urged ODM leaders to support ongoing Government
programs and maintain party cohesion.
He specifically challenged Sifuna to lead proactively in
Nairobi without appearing desperate, and advised Babu Owino to prioritize
constituents’ needs over his declared bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
“I want to see Sifuna being proactive in Nairobi without appearing
desperate.”
“Babu Owino should also prioritise citizens’ welfare over declaring
ambitions for the gubernatorial seat in 2027.
“Leadership is about delivery, not just positioning,” he added.
Tensions have escalated within ODM in recent weeks.
Sifuna has publicly opposed the party’s cooperation with
President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, threatening to quit if
ODM backs Ruto in 2027.
Meanwhile, Owino has announced his intention to run for Governor,
acknowledging internal friction and doubts about securing the ODM ticket.
The death of former Prime Minister and long-serving party
leader, Raila Odinga, has also left the party in uncharted waters.
