23, 2025 - Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) Secretary General, Moss
Ndiema, has accused former Prime Minister Raila Odinga of attempting to revive
the controversial JKIA-Adani lease deal, following his recent remarks defending
the Indian conglomerate.
Speaking on Monday, September 22nd, Odinga
criticized past opposition to Adani Group’s proposed investment in Jomo
Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), stating that “Adani came here to invest,
not to take away resources.”
He lamented that parliamentary resistance led to the
company’s withdrawal.
In response, Ndiema claimed Odinga’s comments were a
strategic move to gauge public reaction and potentially reopen the shelved
deal.
“Raila is testing the waters. He had a stake in the Adani
deal, which is why he’s bitter,” Ndiema alleged.
He challenged Odinga to release Adani’s original proposal
for public scrutiny and dismissed the notion that the group intended to invest.
“They wanted to use JKIA as collateral to borrow money.”
“If that’s the case, the Kenya Airports Authority can do it
directly. Why involve a middleman?” Ndiema questioned.
The Adani deal was terminated in November 2024 by President
William Ruto, citing credible evidence of graft.
During his State of the Nation address, Ruto directed
Transport CS Davis Chirchir and Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi to halt all
Adani-related projects.
